preventive care coverage
Available as an add-on to your base plan, preventive care coverage was designed to keep your pet healthy with coverage for eligible routine services, like annual checkups, vaccines, and screenings.
what is preventive care?
Preventive care coverage gives you cash back for eligible routine services that help keep your pet living a happier, healthier, longer life. Things like vaccines, flea and tick medication, heartworm prevention, and dental cleanings can help keep your pet from getting sick.
Other services like annual wellness exams and screenings give your veterinarian the opportunity to detect health issues in the early stages, which can mean a better outcome for your pet. Wellness exams also allow your veterinarian to help keep your pet’s weight on track. Pets who are overweight or obese are more at risk for health problems, such as joint pain or kidney disease.
These routine exams can be especially important for cats since they tend to hide or mask their symptoms when sick or injured. As a result, you might miss the signs that something is wrong with your feline friend if you don’t take them to the veterinarian on a regular basis.

how it works
You can choose from one of our two preventive care coverage options. Each option has a list of covered services and a fixed maximum annual benefit amount (the most your plan would pay out in a policy year). You don’t have to satisfy your annual deductible before you can be reimbursed for preventive care coverage, and there’s no waiting period for preventive care coverage either, so you can sign up today and be covered tomorrow.
Here’s an example of how it works. Let’s say you take your pet to the veterinarian for a wellness exam which has a fixed annual maximum reimbursement amount of $50. You would follow these 3 easy steps:

Preventive care coverage can help you pay for the routine medical care your pet needs throughout their life. It’s also a great way to help you stay up-to-date on your pet’s wellness care every year. If you haven’t been staying on top of it, this coverage can prompt you to make those appointments so you can get your reimbursements.
You may be surprised that not all pet insurance providers have preventive care coverage, so keep this in mind when shopping around for a plan. Even if you’re not sure you want this coverage when you first enroll, it’s smart to go with a provider who offers it. Otherwise, it may not be an option if you change your mind in the future.
You may have come across pet wellness plans in your research on pet insurance. It’s important to know that these wellness plans are not the same thing as pet insurance. When you purchase a wellness plan, you are essentially prepaying for the preventive care services your pet may need. You won’t have coverage for accidents, illnesses, hereditary conditions, or behavioral issues like you would with Complete CoverageSM.
Some wellness plans may also limit you to using certain veterinarians or pet hospitals. A plan from ASPCA® Pet Health Insurance, on the other hand, gives you the freedom to visit any licensed veterinarian or specialist in the US/Canada.
Pet insurance can help cover the eligible costs of emergency care and standard treatments for your pet’s unexpected accidents and illnesses, but most base plans (such as Complete CoverageSM) don’t include routine care. Adding preventative care coverage to your plan can help you pay for the expected, routine medical care your pet may need yearly throughout their life, like heartworm tests, vaccinations, annual wellness checkups, fecal tests, and bloodwork.
For example, a Complete CoverageSM plan covers injuries and emergency accidents like bite wounds, cuts, broken bones, swallowed objects, and toxic ingestions as well as major and minor illnesses, such as cancer, arthritis, hypothyroidism, ear infections, digestive problems, and urinary tract infections (UTIs). It also covers all sorts of diagnostic services and treatments prescribed for accidents and illnesses, such as X-rays, MRI, ultrasounds, blood work, medications, hospitalization, and surgery.
Adding preventive care coverage to that same Complete CoverageSM plan will get you everything listed above, plus cash back for keeping your pet healthy. This includes routine services like dental cleanings, wellness exams, heartworm prevention, blood screenings, vaccines, and more. Please note, preventive care coverage is NOT a standalone insurance plan; you must be enrolled in one of our base plans, Complete CoverageSM or Accident-Only.
Although preventive care coverage works differently than our accident and illness coverage, you can use the same easy process to submit these claims. The fastest way to get us your claims is to download the My Pet Insurance app. Just open the app, tell us the services your pet received, and snap a photo of your invoice. The app also lets you track claims, pay your bill, find nearby veterinary clinics, and more.
If you prefer, you can email, fax, or mail us your claim—whatever works best for you. Once we receive it, we’ll process it as quickly as possible. If you signed up for direct deposit, we’ll put your money right into your bank account. Otherwise, you’ll receive a check in the mail for your reimbursement amount.
It’s a walk in the park! You’ll see your options, coverage details, and pricing when you get a quote and can select one that fits your needs and budget. If you’re interested in preventive care coverage, it’s smart to sign up when you first enroll. Otherwise, you’ll have to wait until your plan is reissued in a year to add it.
