Why Get Pet Insurance in Texas?

Known for its wide-open spaces and rugged charm, Texas is a place where adventure awaits at every turn. Here are some common dangers faced by pets in the Lone Star state:

Weather

From the scorching deserts to the sunny beaches of Texas, the unique environment poses risks for our pets. The intense summer heat can result in heatstroke, dehydration, and paw burns. Plus, the warm climate means year-round threats from heartworms, fleas, and ticks.

But it’s not all sunshine in this great state- unexpected dust storms can catch anyone by surprise and could lead to respiratory problems, while flash floods can cause dangerous conditions such as contaminated water, hidden debris, and electrical hazards.

Wildlife

Coyotes are commonly found throughout Texas and have adjusted to residing in various environments, including rural, suburban, and urban areas. While they usually steer clear of humans and exercise caution, an interaction between a coyote and your pet could result in serious consequences. It's important to keep your dog safe by supervising them outdoors, especially during dawn and dusk when coyotes are most active, and always make sure to keep your cat inside!

Texas is also home to Coral snakes, Cottonmouths, Copperheads, and nine different species of Rattlesnake- all venomous and active year-round. The best way to deal with venomous snakes is to do your best to avoid them in the first place. If your pet is bitten by a snake of any kind, get them to veterinary clinic immediately, so they can give your pet anti-venom if necessary.

Bugs

Texans are no strangers to bugs. Big, small, and in between, they are a part of life here in the south. Watch out for fire ants with their itchy bites that can trigger reactions and infections in pets, and make sure to stay away from any scorpions you may see. Just one sting from a bark scorpion could lead to serious symptoms in your pets. Kissing bugs are another one of those creepy crawlies that you want to avoid. The bite of this insect is especially dangerous because they carry a potentially deadly disease called Chagas Disease, which can lead to heart problems in both humans and pets.

There’s a lot in Texas that can affect the well-being of your pet. By having pet insurance, you can steer clear of the stress of unforeseen vet bills and have the support you need to provide the necessary care for your furry friend.
