When you compare PetFirst and ASPCA Pet Health Insurance, one of the biggest differences you’ll notice is their deductible. ASPCA Pet Health Insurance coverage has an annual deductible, which you only need to meet once a year no matter how many times your pet gets hurt or sick. PetFirst insurance coverage has a per incident deductible, so you’ll need to meet this amount every time your pet has a new illness or injury.

PetFirst Insurance Plan Comparison

Some of the main differences between PetFirst and ASPCA® Pet Health Insurance plans include the type of deductible you’ll need to meet and how they handle coverage for prescription food.

Type of Deductible

All pet insurance plans have a deductible, which is the amount you need to meet before you’ll start getting reimbursed. PetFirst has a per incident deductible, which means you’ll need to meet that amount every time you pet has a new diagnosis. With ASPCA® Pet Insurance plans, you only need to meet your deductible once a year. You can also choose from three deductible options of $100, $250, or $500. This way, you can customize your plan based on your budget and coverage needs. If you choose a higher deductible, you’ll pay less for your premium but you’ll need to pay more for your deductible.

Prescription Food and Supplements

Does pet insurance cover prescription food and supplements? That’s a common question especially as they have become more widely used to support certain pet health conditions. Both PetFirst pet insurance and ASPCA® Pet Health Insurance plans offer this coverage but they do so differently.

With PetFirst, coverage for prescription food is an optional add-on that only applies to 25% of the cost of the food up to $250 annually. ASPCA® Pet Health Insurance Complete CoverageSM covers prescription food up to your full annual benefit amount with no separate reimbursement or limits when it is being used to treat a covered condition (not for general maintenance or weight management).

Accident Only Plan Available

If you’re looking to cover your pet for accidents but not illnesses, you can choose an accident only plan with ASPCA® Pet Health Insurance. While this plan gives you less comprehensive coverage, it is less expensive so it may be a good option for people on a tight budget. PetFirst does not offer accident only coverage.

Microchip

ASPCA® Pet Insurance plans cover the implantation of a microchip, which can help make sure your pet is returned to you as quickly as possible. PetFirst offers coverage for microchipping, but it is an optional add-on, so you’ll need to pay extra for it.

Multiple Pet Discount

The ASPCA® Pet Health Insurance program has a 10% multiple pet discount so you can save 10% on your base plan premium for every additional pet you insure. PetFirst offers a 5% discount for your second pet and 10% for three or more.

Money Back Guarantee

The ASPCA® Pet Health Insurance program and PetFirst offer money back guarantees. However, the PetFirst guarantee lasts for 14 days and only applies if you do not submit any claims. The ASPCA® Pet Health Insurance program gives you 30 days to make sure you’re comfortable with your coverage. As long as no covered expenses have been applied to your deductible or reimbursed, you can get a full refund within this time frame.*

*We offer a 30-day money back guarantee if no claims are filed. Not available in NY.
